Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, remains one of the biggest global public health challenges facing our generation. The increased prevalence of dementia, though not a consequence of old age, means that the number of people with dementia continues to grow. Their needs for care start early in the disease course, and evolve constantly over time, requiring advanced planning, monitoring, and coordination. The complicated and demanding treatment and care for people with dementia present a myriad of important ethical questions and responsibilities to both the family and the care professionals involved such as ' What do we think of the quality of life of people with dementia and of their subsequent end of life?', 'How to account for their opinion about where to live?'. In response to such multidimensional challenges, and the rapid developments in the standards of dementia care, specialised knowledge and skills are required in order to meet the changes of needs of both the individuals, their caregivers, and the wide-range of professionals involved. The Cyprus Nurses and Midwifery Association has a very active role in continuous professional development and adult education and it has a dedicated team of trainers that provide educational and training courses to both its members as well as to other adults and organisations such as non-goverment associations of patients, health-policy makers, health managers, and researchers. It has been acknowledged that the area of ethics in dementia care has not been adequately explored at skills training level which can adversely affect the quality of care being provided. Thus there is a need to strengthen the knowledge and skills of the training staff involved in dementia care in order to subsequently provide robust and high-quality training courses to individuals involved in dementia care which in turn can have positive impact on the quality of care being provided to individuals with dementia and their caregivers. The objectives of the proposed project are:1) To enhance the competencies of the training staff by acquiring specific training in emerging and cutting-edge areas of ethics in dementia that will strengthen their existing skills and knowledge.2) To identify topics and areas of dementia care that could be addressed and/or further explored in the current training and educational curriculum in Cyprus to meet the dynamic developments of dementia care. 3) To enhance collaboration with European and International experts from various disciplines and organisations working in dementia care aiming for future partnerships in education, training and research projects There are 2 participants with considerable training, clinical and research expertise in dementia care and training and their knowledge reflects the multidisciplinary nature of dementia care. The main activity of the project is the participation in a training course on 'Ethics in Dementia Care' . The project will involve face-to-face individual and group discussions, electronic communication, training, information provision, reporting and feedback to the members, key stakeholders and the wider community. It is expected that by meeting the project objectives, the participants will advance their knowledge on cutting-edge areas in ethics in dementia care not yet investigated and implemented locally as well as engage in exchange of ideas and best practices with colleagues, trainers and the wider member community. This will lead to an expansion of high-quality training courses and research, and an improvement of current practices in dementia care at clinical, educational and community level.Potential longer term benefits include increasing the number of skilled and trained adults in dementia care with beneficial impact on the quality of care being delivered to individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Furthermore, collaborations with external organisations regarding clinical training, research and education can be established and place Cyprus on the map of latest developments in the field of dementia care and ethics.
