Et Lettera - writing pictures, drawing words
Start date: Oct 15, 2010,

The project titled "Et Lettera" will gather schools of arts, museums and libraries from Strasbourg, Warsaw, Brno, Debrecen, Arad and Barcelona, cities which already have a common experience of cultural cooperation. The complete title " Et Lettera - writing pictures, drawing words " indicates the close relationship between letters as writing symbols and letters as graphic symbols. As a matter of fact, the project demonstrates with the help of specialized book collections, the learning process of writing, and more generally the link between illustration and writing. Finally the aim is to emphasize awareness of handwriting in a digital era. Thanks to this project, several activities will be organised by each partner city. A travelling exhibition, composed by pieces coming from the collections of the partner cities, chosen by a European curators' team, showing course and alphabet books, calligraphy and printing, will be presented in four cities. Furthermore, artist-in-residence programmes will permit illustrators to develop their own work. Several workshops led by European and local artists, are dedicated to children from urban and rural areas, to young people, students and elementary teachers. First of all the workshops should initiate a creative process and secondly they should have a strong pedagogical output in order to help children learning how to read and write. Two conferences on writing and reading will be offered. Study visits dedicated to librarians and teachers will take place in four cities, permitting participants to exchange experiences and knowledge on pedagogical topics. An Internet website will gather all the information about this process in Europe and will inform the general public as well as specialists about the evolution of the ideas and activities on this subject. To summarize, the project would like to emphasize the importance of handwriting today, where new technologies are omnipresent in communication processes.
