Escape Europe. Kurdische Jugendliche machen sich stark für mehr Mitspracherecht an der europäischen Flüchtlingspolitik
Start date: May 1, 2015, End date: Apr 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "Escape Europe" is the result of the urgent necessity to involve young people in the political processes that determine the European refugee policy. Many young people in Europe are passive objects of that policy but in our project young people got the chance to get actively involved in policy making. In three conceptually different but mutually constructive trainings young people with Kurdish roots received information on issues of refugee policies and ways to actually help refugees. With the help of their new knowledge and experience they started a dialogue with local and nationwide experts and decision makers. The project started with the “Simulation Game Academy” from 2 to 8 August 2015 in Neuendorf next to Berlin where 18 young people took the roles either of European decision-makers or of asylum seekers just arriving in Germany. In addition, the participants visited several Berlin institutions of refugee policies and refugee assistance and engaged in dialogue with the local experts and decision makers. In a second step at the “Media Academy” also 18 young people took part in. In a preparation workshop from 30 October to 1 November 2015 the issue of flight and expulsion was approached using creativity and art as tools. After a theme based input on the topic of "escape routes" the participants created two concepts for two screenplays of an animated movie and a short documentary. This was followed by two other workshops serving the purpose of the realization of the two films. Firstly the documentary workshop took place from 13 to 15 November 2015 in Berlin. Here the participants got prepared for the filming at several locations in Berlin during the following weeks. Secondly the animated movie workshop that took place at the “Creative Workshop: Refugee Policy”. With the help of drawings, narratives and rap the participants created the animated movie “Alans Weg in die Freiheit” that can be found on our project homepage http://komciwan.eu/escape_europe/. Based on the “Simulation Game Academy” is the “Creative Workshop: Refugee Policy” which took place from 25 December to 30 December 2015. But with 50 participants it took on a much larger scale. The mornings of this 6-day training were filled with information and education activities, while the afternoons were devoted to creating further project results in interest-based creative workshops, including a play about refugee policy, a concept for a binational project in the structure dialogue and a recommended course of action for the European refugee policy. Our closing event, a reception on the occasion of the Kurdish New Year`s “Newroz” took place on March 17th 2016 in Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. Here we finally presented the project results to a broad public and our participants engaged in dialogue with local and nationwide experts and decision makers that had followed our invitation and discussed their demands and recommendations for action with them. By participating in the project "Escape Europe" young people did not only get to know the mechanisms of modern representative democracy, but also learned that their participation in political decision-making is possible and desirable. This makes the project an important step in the process of empowerment of these young people and their organizations. Young people with migrational background especially contribute to the realization of a Europe of unity in diversity. Our project made sure that these young people participated actively in the European project.
