Erstellung eines Gesamtkonzepts zur Flüchtlingsbeschulung für die Heinrich-Emanuel-Merck-Schule Darmstadt

Five teachers from the Heinrich-Emanuel-Merck-Schule, who teach different subjects at different departments of our school, intend to explore innovative and motivating approaches for teaching foreign languages by participating in mobility programs to Great-Britain, Ireland and France. The new knowledge and competences gained in these activities will be crucial for the development of a concept for teaching refugees at our school and will give answers how to approach the social challenges of a high number of refugee students. This concept for teaching refugees at our school will also support our current clientele of students who have a migrant background or problems with learning languages. The concept, which will be created by the participants of the mobilities, will be presented at the different school boards, discussed and evaluated so that the school staff comes to a joint agreement on how to approach the teaching of refugees in different subjects of the HEMS.The main focus of the concept and, self evidently, the mobility programs will be the following issues:• learner centred methods: from direct instruction to open learning arrangements• integration of the language of origin in the language learning• focus on German as a foreign language in non language classes like technical or vocational subjects• heterogeneity and inclusion in the class room• new teaching content: communicating values and democracy as a bedrock of European culture• prevention of violence• peer learning projects for strengthening the European dimension in schoolGermany has become an immigrant country, which results in high numbers of students with a migrant or refugee background. Therefore, we believe that the intended concept will have a high relevance for our school community and will need to be adapted to changing requirements in the future. Furthermore, the planed mobilities will enhance the opportunities for networking with other European participants so that the Heinrich-Emanuel-Merck-Schule will ensure an effective exchange of methodical and didactical questions and mutual learning.
