Erasmus+: a tool against Early School Leaving
Start date: Jan 1, 2016, End date: Jul 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The idea of creating a PBA for organizations engaged in interventions with young people, school dropouts or the ones at risk, arises from the need to create an international strategy and cooperation between the stakeholders, to exchange new methodological approaches that improve the performance of activities for young people. The ongoing confrontation with the educators of theyouth center of Per Esempio, active since 2012 in Borgo Vecchio (peripheral area of Palermo), gave birth to the desire and willingness of cooperating with other European organizations that face the same educational issues, exploring together the dynamics that lead young people to not participate in school education. The aim is to create an international Strategic Plan against ESL, create quality partnerships and to promote Erasmus+ as a tool to reduce ESL. It will be useful to compare and share methods of intervention and different educational activities and to identify replicable best practices which can be used both at local, national and international level.Following the EU2020 Strategy and Erasmus+ objectives (reducing ESL under 10%), the project aims to increase the effectiveness of interventions combatting early school leaving, giving youth workers the opportunity to get to know other actors and stakeholders, discovering and designing new approaches, creating a strong base for future collaborations, networking, capacity building and skills development. We expect to achieve the following specific objectives:• foster the exchange of good practices at European level in the field of combatting early school leaving;• enhance the ability of networking between European organizations working against early school leaving in order to create newpartnerships and to stimulate the mobility of youth workers;• develop personal and professional skills and competencies of youth workers especially in the field of ESL.The 27 participants involved (from 18 years old to no age limit) - board members and project managers of organisations, educators, trainers, youth workers, volunteers dealing with ESL - will come from Italy, Estonia, Greece, Portugal, Romania, Turkey, Hungary, Latvia and Spain and will gather from 15th to 19th March 2016 in Palermo. The main activity of the project is a Partnership Building Activity, Erasmus+ KA1 – Training and networking of youth workers. Their learning will be facilitated by three trainers, provided by the coordinating/hosting organization. The methodology used will be non-formal education, composed by methods, such as creative workshops, simulations, role plays, focus groups, team building activities, drama activities, audiovisual presentations, story-telling. Besides the methods above mentioned, the trainers will facilitate and stimulate to reflect, debrief and learn new knowledge by using the maieutic or Socratic method, that induces the participants to formulate latent concepts through a dialectic or logical sequence of questions. The maieutic approach will allow the participants to concretely summarize and deeper analyze what they have learnt through the non-formal exercises proposed before without receiving pre-established concepts and/or knowledge .The expected results of the project are:- participants gain and exchange knowledge on Erasmus+ Programme, discover what changed regards to the previous EU programmes (transition from Youth in Action to Erasmus+)- participants acquire project management skills (Project Cycle Management)- broaden knowledge on ESL- network of partners who are committed to reach strategic objectives (reducing ESL)- Checklist for Quality Standard Partnerships- International Strategic Plan for reducing ESL- promotion of Erasmus+ as a tool to reach these objectives- creation of a blog on ESL.The organisations will benefit from the project, having staff and collaborators in the youth sector with high skills; an enlarged international network, working together within the frame of a Strategic Plan; new approaches, methods addressing ESL. The project thus will benefit the society at local, national and international level, having increased the capacity and the international dimensionwithin the organisations working with ESL. The project will contribute to reducing ESL rate under 10% in the participating countries and will promote the Erasmus+ Programme as a tool for reaching strategic goals.
