Environment for Human Exploration and RObotic Experimentation in Space (eHEROES)
Start date: Mar 1, 2012, End date: Feb 28, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The consortium e-HEROES aims at exploiting the existing data gathered on severalEuropean and international space missions, and to produce new value-added dataproducts to provide the best estimate and prediction of the threats thatmissions of exploration will encounter in reaching beyond the Earth orbit, tothe Moon, to Mars and beyond. The scope of the project is to characterise theenvironment in space, to provide useful information for planning andimplementing space missions, manned or robotic. We plan to realize effectivescientific exploitation of space data combining different datasets from currentsolar system robotic explorations with data from current and past space-basedand complementing ground-based observations, joined with new data sources fromthe newest missions. We plan to add value to the data by better organising itand cross link it, by applying state of the art models and developing new onesto analyse it. We plan additionally to assimilate the heliospheric data in spaceenvironment simulations. The wealth of data, models and simulations commanded bythe project will be used to characterise the evolution of space in time, lookingforward over the future at the possible scenarios for planning new missions. Wewill consider key aspects on how the expected space environment can affectmissions, in terms of predicting the impact on reliability and correctfunctionality of instrumentation as well as in terms of main radiationcomponents affecting the health of astronauts. The proposing team would realizea wide international synergy in the fields of solar and space physics includingexperts from 11 European countries, a space-faring partner from Russia, andcollaborators from US and Canada. The set of public deliverables publishedon-line facilitates access to the higher level data for those scientists who arenot part of the team. The research work will be accompanied with widedissemination activity.
