EntreRURAL - Exploring Entrepreneurship in Rural Areas
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Jan 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The partner organizations of this project has a good knowledge to each other and have been working together on several projects promoting outdoor activities and bringing closer urban youth to rural areas and its potential. When brainstorming during a Skype meeting, we searched for an issue that was standing out in all of the participant’s organizations, communities and regions. Being outdoor and environmental enthusiasts partners of the project have spoken about trends of young people seeking to settle in bigger cities and moving away from rural areas where mostly aging communities are left. We see the unused potential and problems being brought by extensive urbanization and these problems will only strengthen during the years. Thus, there is a need to discover rural and natural areas as a potential field for entrepreneurial thought and career development for young people. We see rural areas as a great potential place for personal development and work. So much entrepreneurial thought is made towards ICT and institutions situated in big cities, that rural areas are left out again and bright minds of youngsters are set towards achieving bigger things in bigger cities. When growing up in a rural area it can be easy to be demotivated with the possibilities within the area. We want to create success stories among the participants that will motivate them to see new possibilities for them and for the rural area. Thus, we would like to address the issue of needs and potential of rural areas for young people. We want to find ideas and ways to create sustainable and social business ideas for and with youngsters to be set in the rural areas of our countries. The ideas that will arise during the projects may be in the field of tourism, development, recreation, education and whatsoever. Entrepreneurship can be a key in achieving that. Entrepreneurship is happening when good ideas and innovations is converted to value for others. We believe that entrepreneurship isn’t limited to the private sector, but something that can happen in all parts of society and especially among young people. The entrepreneurial mind-set can have both an economic value, but also a social value, since it not only have job creating and economic growth aspect, but also a social aspect. The value of the community will improve drastically and might decrease the migration of young people to the big cities. Through entrepreneurship we want to give the young people an understanding of the opportunities that is hidden in the rural areas and nature to create an economic and social value that can benefit both the participants and the local society. We believe that we through self-development among the participants can create opinion formers and leaders on entrepreneurship and the advantages of the rural areas and its nature. Thereby empowering the young participants to acquire the skills that will optimize the potential of the rural areas and its nature. Objectives of the chain project: - To foster mutual understanding of the issues of urbanization and unemployment; - To discover entrepreneurial potential of rural/natural areas that would not be harmful for the environment; - To discover appropriate models of employability in the rural/natural areas; - To show potential career choices and promote rural/natural areas for young people; - To develop tools for fostering green/social entrepreneurial attitude to be applied in rural/natural areas; - To address the issues of urbanization to a wide range of policy-makers. In our chain project we would like to apply a strategy for researching the issues and leading the mobilities. The project will be structured: Problem -> Example -> Appliance -> Dissemination. Meaning that first we would like to discover the rural/natural environments of our regions and find potential ideas that can be applied in the communities by young people and then to lead dissemination activities aimed at training youth workers, creating concrete materials to be used by a bigger spectre of youth workers, creating follow-up projects, addressing the ideas to decision-makers. We will at each mobility train 28 young people to think and act with an entrepreneurial mind-set and the profile of the participants will be young people that have troubles with bridging the gap between the formal system and the job, market since they have few opportunities because of level of education or lack of job offers in the region. We hope that we through the three YE will gain some first hand experience with entrepreneurship in rural areas that will be sustainable and able to transfer to other regions or countries and that will be easy to disseminate and spread at the TC.
