PROJECT
FINISHED
We are from Daugavpils, Latvia. Our pre-school educational establishment was opened on September 1, 2009. It is located in a modern three-storied building. More than 100 children aged 1.5 – 7 attend our school. There are 28 employees including 13 teachers.
Latgale is Latvia’s region with the highest level of unemployment and lowest standard of living. We work with children from families of various social statuses – low-income families, families where both parents are unemployed, families where Latvian is not a mother tongue, and Roma families. In order to integrate children from various social backgrounds into the life of the school it is necessary for the teachers to possess a high level of professionalism. However, taking into account modern-life tendencies the ability to integrate others and to be integrated oneself is the key one in order to feel free in modern environment and to stay competitive.
We have participated in a number of projects including international ones such aseTwinningand Comenius. In the run of the projects working together with our partners, the school’s teachers have improved their knowledge of the English language, and, analyzing the present situation we come to a conclusion that the English language proficiency of some of our teachers enables us to introduce English language lessons and incorporate them into the curriculum for children from the age of 4. The English language proficiencyof other teachers needs to be improved, which will allow them later to get involved in the implementation of the programme.
This project is necessary to implement the school’s plan of strategic development.
The aims of the project: to introduce innovative methods of teaching, to provide the teachers with the opportunity to acquire English language and methods of teaching in order to elaborate a curriculum which meets the needs and requirements of our school, to develop methods of teaching English and organizing the study process for children from the age of 4, which is not offered by any other schools in Daugavpils. We will then exchange and promote our experience among teachers from other schools.
In order to achieve these aims it is necessary to expand teachers’ competence, to improve their English language proficiency and to acquire methods of teaching English as a foreign language, which in its turn will allow our school to become even more modern and competitive which provides relevant study forms and environment and where both students and teachers, the school and the city are beneficiaries, and the most important issue, which allows us to work with re-emigrant children.
The knowledge and skills acquired during the mobility time will allow us to elaborate a study programme of teaching English as a foreign language, which will meet all methodological and age requirements for this type of programmes, as well as to develop and improve the methods and skills of teaching English and the ways of organizing the classes.
The selection of participants has been organized on the basis of their present level of English language competence, their active participation on Comenius project, their desire and ability to take on new responsibilities.
During the time in project we will place the information about the project on our webpage as well as Daugavpils official webpage and the webpage of Daugavpils Department for Education. Having elaborated the programme and curriculum we will run various kinds of events in our school as well as we will run open lessons for teachers from other schools and seminars for heads of other schools which will be promoted on television. We will prepare an article to publish in the magazine "Pirmsskola". The outcomes of the project will be evaluated at the end of the study year 1 and 2. There will be elaborated the tasks for children and questionnaires for parents. During the project parents will be invited to open English language lessons and theatricals.
At the end of the project the school’s teachers will have the experience in teaching English language, the study programme and curriculum will be elaborated, as well as the material basis will be developed, which allows us to continue this work, provide qualitative services, to enroll re-emigrant children to the school.
