Empowering Minds: Appreciating One's Own Culture, History and Environment through the Eyes of the Other
Start date: Mar 15, 2012,

This project is a trilateral exchange focused on giving young people with disability an opportunity to interact and learn about different cultures and environmental issues through informal and non-formal ways. It will be hosted in Malta and will involve the participation of partner promoters based in Germany and the United Kingdom. The main theme of the project will be cultural awareness and environmental consciousness. The project aims to provide young people with intellectual disabilities from different countries the opportunity to learn about each others' cultural and traditional backgrounds and to also broaden their knowledge and consciousness about the environment. The exchange will in turn provide access to an experience which differs from the immediate environment and routine for youth with intellectual disabilities, and which seeks to broaden their horizons and to facilitate their self-development and self-awareness. The exchange will involve 7 participants with disabilities from the partner countries. On the other hand, Malta (host) will have 10 youth with disabilities participating in the exchange, thus providing an opportunity also for those who have difficulty in going abroad due to challenging behaviour and/or phobias to travel. The event will cater for a total of 35 participants (including group leaders/assistants).The 8-day exchange programme will consist of visits to cultural heritage sites, places of historical and environmental interest, as well as exposure to traditional crafts. Activities will also promote the sharing of knowledge and ideas related to culture and the environment among the participants coming from the different partner countries. This will enrich the exposure and learning experience of these youth with intellectual disability. Other outdoor activities and social events are planned, where the participants will be able to interact, learn from each other and share their socio-cultural backgrounds.
