Embrace diversity
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: Dec 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

„Embrace diversity“ was a youth exchange that took place in the city of Žilina from 27th of August till 5th of September 2015. 45 young participants with and without disability from Portugal, Germany, Malta, Slovenia, Greece, Poland, Slovakia and Czech Republic came together in mixed ability groups, met, got to know each other, exchanged ideas and experienced trans-national group dynamics. Nowadays many disadvantage people in Europe are excluded and are challenged by the stereotypes and prejudice. During the youth exchange we tried to use and celebrate diversity (disadvantage, disability,...) and special abilities and perception. The aim of this project was to create opportunities for all, in other words to include all participants and to celebrate unique abilities and perspectives. The project provided participants with the opportunity to explore diversity and inclusion in the small community, using different artistic mediums such as handy craft, drama, dance and music. Participants were provided with self-determining and creative freedom to examine inclusion and diversity , what it means, and had space to share personal experiences in the field of inclusion. The project included workshops, discussions and exchanges of experience among the participants. The exchange lasted for 10 days, enough time for the participants to explore their role and place in local community, share possibilities and create opportunities for inclusion. We worked under the theme of diversity and inclusion in different workshops and we used interactive methods in the context of non-formal education. With methods such as group work, creative thinking or debates, participants shared the different ways of how to become a part of community and how to increase mutual respect and acceptance. With this project we promoted the inclusion of young people with fewer opportunities, as well as fostered and strengthened positive feelings such as solidarity, respect and curiosity over difference and cultural diversity, cooperation, and active participation. The aim of this project was to show everybody, including people with disabilities, that it is possible to include everybody. Participants explored how different ideas of inclusion provided space for positive experiences and social change. We have presented this model of inclusion and diversity for public in creative and friendly atmosphere.
