Embedding Dyslexia-Responsive Practices in Lifelong Learning

A series of dyslexia-specific projects have taken place in a number of EU (and other)actions in recent years. Several skilled and dedicated partnerships have featured, eachcollaborating with a special emphasis on one key area of dyslexia or on general dyslexiaissues to a specific target group. However, despite all this action, resources and freelyavailable advice, there is still considerable room for improvement in the support of thedyslexic individual. Having reviewed the current provision, and the information availablewithin these EU funded project, it is now the appropriate time to look collectively at theoutcomes of these initiatives with a view to embedding a real change of approach andpractice to working with the dyslexic European citizen today. This new initiative willidentify and clarify previous areas of problems and weaknesses, and will not shy awayfrom rigorous examination of these issues to avoid the same mistakes being repeated inthe future. The emphasis of the project will be on the more effective implementation ofreal and tangible change in provision through dynamic dissemination activities. Theproject partners will proactively encourage the diverse user groups to reflect on theircurrent provision and support, and to make effective changes through a series of selfanalysistools developed by synthesising the experiences of the past projects. Thepartnership for this project reflects a combination of the main players from the previousinitiatives as well as a diversity of organisations from a series of networks that crossEurope.Key issues / activities1) Identification and profiling, support for adults andchildren, with particular reference to Project Include, Adstrain and ESF2) The role oftechnology in supporting the individual with dyslexia, with particular reference toProvision and Use, Calldysc, and Edysgate3) Continuity of experience in LifelongLearning with particular reference to Dystrain and Adystrain4) Embedding into themainstream of education through policies and implementation strategies, with referenceto all the projects.
