Elderly Care Vocational Training and Rehabilitation System

As Europe's demographic profile is aging and more elderly people are being looked after in care institutions, the project partners have identified the need for accessible and comprehensive training for those taking care of the elderly. The partners intend to develop computer-based training material that allows potential and existing employees in this sector to self-train in order to meet national and EU standards for elderly care. Software will be identified that can deliver a training package featuring video-clips, animations, close-up simulations, text and validation exercises. Training content will be developed to reflect the demands of EU standards in elderly care and the current skills displayed by those already working in this sector. The core training modules will include subjects such as 'attendance', 'cleaning', 'hygiene', 'entertainment' and 'administration'. The training programme will be piloted through a 'training of trainees' in different health and social service sectors and through workshops with sample course participants in each of the partner countries. As the training package is self-administered via a computer, which can be based in a VET institution or at the trainee's home, trainees will be able to learn at their own pace; as a result, disadvantaged groups will benefit from the computer-based learning. Trainees will have the option to apply, through the mechanism of the project partnership, for validation of their acquired skills and the award of the project's certificate of competencies. The project partnership will establish a network to promote use of the project's computer-based training product. Dissemination will include the development of a project website, the bi-annual release of information on project progress, press releases, and a series of dissemination workshops across the participating countries.
