Effects of climate change and plant nutrition on the carbon cycle of soil-plant system in two long-term experiments (Szénforgalom/Circuitul Carbonului)
Start date: Dec 31, 2010, End date: Dec 30, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project intends to provide facilities to solve the joint, cross-border problem and challenge of climate change regarding the agricultural production by a joint research program. Based on the two long-term experiments of the cooperating partners located in different microclimatic and soil conditions, a joint basic research work could be done on the relationship between plant species and plant nutrition systems in view of the carbon cycle (mitigation and adaptation) of which results can be adapted in both country on similar soils covered high rate of the area of Hungary and Romania. The general objective is to examine the carbon cycle in the soil-plant system (mitigation and adaptation) under different plant nutrition methods and their effects on the climatic change of the Earth. Specific objectives are the followings: - to establish a joint research base of the project partners by development of a joint laboratory and field research technical base, - to work out our joint research program on the bases of a joint research plan in the two long-term experiment, and to evaluate their results, - to calculate carbon balances of different plant nutrition systems on the two examined soil types based on the mitigation and adaptation studies, - to establish a joint data base for the following development of CO2-reducing agricultural production technologies. The direct target group is formed by scientists of the two joint partners for their new research work because the answers to the problems of climate change are connected with the research activity in plant-breeding, agronomy and soil research. The main activities of this project are:- Establishment of the joint research base: Procurement of research equipments necessary for the establishment of the joint research base and program by conduction of public procurement procedures according to the rules of EU and the national rules of participating countries. Organization of training of staff for the use of the new equipments.- Research of the connection between mitigation and plant nutrition: Evaluation of the status of mitigation in the concerned countries and regions. Studying the effects of different plant nutrition methods for storing the organic material in the soil and for CO2 elevation from the soil. Common evaluation of the research results, making conclusions and indication of new research directions and tasks.- Research of the connection between mitigation and soil microbiological activity: The effects of plant nutrition systems and plant species on the role of soil microorganisms in the CO2 elevation and bounding. Common evaluation of the research results, making conclusions and indication of new research directions and tasks.- Research of the connection between plant adaptation and plant nutrition: Evaluation of the status of adaptation in the concerned countries and regions. Effects of different plant nutrition systems on the intensity of photosynthesis and hereby building-in of CO2 into organic material in different plant species grown in the long-term experiments. Common evaluation of the research results, making conclusions and indication of new research directions and tasks.
