Effective mechanism for implementing solar energy in Kurzeme and Klaipeda (Solar Think Tank)
Start date: Sep 30, 2010, End date: Dec 30, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

The worlds energy sector is moving towards using more and more renewable energy sources. The European Union directives already now suggest the proportion of the total energy consumed in European Union countries that should be renewable. Relatively big share of energy in Latvia and Lithuania is supplied by hydroelectric power stations; meanwhile solar energy is produced in very small amounts. Together with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, the non-governmental organization Solar Energy Think Tank is conducting the project with an ultimate goal to promote solar energy use in public sector and households in the most solar radiated regions of Latvia and Lithuania - Kurzeme and Klaipeda. The combined team of both partners is researching local and foreign legal frameworks and regulations in Baltic Sea region to produce a strategy on how to facilitate solar energy usage in Kurzeme and Klaipeda regions. Several field trips will help to collect industry-specific information essential for the development of the strategy. In addition, five solar test panels are being installed to provide valuable data for the research. The solar radiation levels will be measured in Kolka and Klaipeda coastal areas. The research results and the strategy will be presented to local municipalities and home owners.
