Edukacja na miarę XXI wieku – innowacyjne metody nauczania przedmiotów matematyczno-przyrodniczych w obliczu nowych wyzwań techniki i zmieniających się potrzeb rynku pracy
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Context Schools notice students` difficulties in learning Mathematics and Science. The analyses of the results of teaching and the results of final exams also confirm this fact. The findings of PISA show lower levels of achievements in Mathematics and Science than in the humanities. Also pupils say that they encounter considerable difficulties in learning Mathematics and Science and that they rarely do experiments during the lessons. Too low percentage of school leavers enter higher technical education. As a result, they have less opportunities of finding jobs in areas requiring technical training. In order to improve this situation, it is necessary to implement changes at the gimnazjum level – this is when pupils start learning Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geography. It is crucial to facilitate the process of learning and to increase the students` motivation to study these subjects. At this stage of education pupils should recognize and state their preferences with regard to their future professional career. This will allow them to make a right choice of further education and, consequently, improve the opportunity to find a job matching their interests and skills. The better match at the human-work level, the more chances of personal success and social advantages. Aims The major aim of the project is to establish and implement innovative, active teaching methods into school practice which will increase pupils` motivation to learn Mathematics and Science. In addition to this, pupils will participate in a range of activities teaching them how to plan their professional career and how to make a wise choice of job. -Establish an innovative interdisciplinary curriculum of Mathematics and Science as well as reinforce and modify the existing ones -Increase the need of knowledge and the willingness to study science and technology by introducing more laboratory work, experiments and practical activities into school practice -Introduce pupils to creative thinking and reasoning through project work -Make pupils aware of the interdisciplinary aspect of today`s knowledge by conducting cross-curricular activities integrating Science and Mathematics subjects -Make the pupils discover their interests and recognize their capacities, do research on the job market and be able to make right choices of further education and professional career The project is dedicated to gimnazjum pupils or their peers at the similar stage of education in different educational systems. The project activities are dedicated to all pupils of the partner schools. As the topic is Science and Mathematics teaching, it involves the teachers of these subjects. The language support is provided by the language teachers. Description of project work The project work mainly consists in using innovative teaching methods to conduct school activities. -Cross-curricular activities. They will include practical work, laboratory work, scientific experiments in which integrated science and mathematics knowledge will be a necessary tool to successfully solve a problem. -Practical activities and workshops conducted out of school, field trips and visits in different institutions. They will allow to correlate theoretical knowledge with practical application required in students` future jobs Pupils will take part in competitions, make films, make a collection of tasks and mathematical games. The second group are activities related to job counselling – workshops teaching pupils to discover their interests and professional preferences, job market research, gaining knowledge of different jobs, interviews, visits to different workplaces, participation in Career Days. The correlation between these two groups of activities will allow pupils to make a right education and career choice in the future. Assumed results -Develop the school leavers` competence in Science and Mathematics -Increase the number of pupils undertaking further education in Mathematics and Science classes -Develop the pupils` ability to recognize their professional capacities and to wisely plan their careers -Develop the teachers` professional competence and encourage creative and open-minded attitudes -Enhance the prestige, attractiveness and the quality of work of the school -Increase the sense of belonging to the European society among all the participants of the project and all the people involved in the work Potential long-term advantages -increase the number of young people entering engeneering and technical jobs locally and abroad -decrease the number of people thretened with early school leaving, unemployment and social degradation
