Educating the Educators
Start date: Aug 14, 2014, End date: Dec 13, 2014 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Training Course ‘Educating the Educators’ will take place in Limassol, Cyprus over a period of eight days (including travel days) and with 25 participants from Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Lithuania and Slovakia. The participants will be members and/or youth workers and/or youth leaders of the organizations. The objectives of the course are to endow participants with the attitudes and approaches necessary for the creation of a human rights culture and to develop their technical ability to implement human rights education activities within their own organizations. More particularly, participants will understand the concepts of human rights education, intercultural education and citizenship education, explore Council of Europe handbooks such as COMPASS, All Different All Equal, Gender Matter, Companion and Volunteering against poverty and learn how to prepare, implement and evaluate activities from these sources as tools for promoting human rights and fundamental freedoms. The overarching aim is to improve the capacity of youth organizations to promote human rights through human rights education, intercultural education and citizenship education. The methodology adopted will emanate from principles of non-formal learning. The activities employed shall emanate primarily from these handbooks. Participatory activities such as team games, role play, group discussions and wall magazines shall allow participants to be at the epicentre of the course. There will also be co-operative group work that will facilitate the understanding of intricate topics and allow for the development of effective problem solving skills, whilst simultaneously ensuring the active participation of all. Throughout the training course, real life will constitute a key learning device which will be depicted through the use of media as a source of discussion material. Visual tools will be used as a source of information and interest stimulation. Many of the days will be dedicated to a particular human rights issue such as general human rights and active citizenship, combatting racism, promoting gender equality and combatting poverty and social exclusion. Participants will be able to improve their knowledge on key themes, facts and issues pertaining to the above before moving on to implementing activities. The training course will constitute a microcosm of tolerance, respect and solidarity, developing keys skills and attitudes that will continue following the end of the course. The participants will have a chance to draw up a plan of action which they will take back to their organizations with a view of enhancing human rights education therein. After the course, AEQUITAS will draw up a report on the project, its aims and objectives, methodologies and activities as well as results which it will disseminate widely as a source for other youth organizations to refer to when implementing such activities. Moreover, this project aspires to improve the capacity of the partner organizations to use human rights education methods as tools for change in the short and long term.
