Ecoremediation

The project goal is to ensure the ecological balance of the region regardless of state borders, the concentrated cooperation of all expert bodies, organizations from the field of environmental protection and achieving joint professional management of protected areas. Consequently, during the project, the revitalization of the ecosystem of the Kerca stream along its flow through Hungary and a shorter section through Slovenia were carried out, a solution for biological purification of water flowing into the stream was designed, and pollution was reduced by increasing the share of extensive forms of surface management along the stream. The following demonstration polygons have also been implemented in the project: protection of the hinterland area of the drinking water spring in Kovacevci; additional conditioning of drinking water before entering the network; optimisation of natural and artificial wetlands for the enhancement of self-cleaning capacities of a part of the valley of the Libanja stream, the left tributary of the Drava River in the Jeruzalem Landscape Park. In addition, educational paths for tourists were designed, a richly illustrated booklet printed and a documentary on the stream and finished activities prepared. Achievements: There was a significant reduction of the pollution of the Kerca stream and its surroundings during the project. The water quality shows significant improvement which will improve considerably when the eco-remediation technologies enter into a wider application. It was noted during the constant monitoring of the Kerca stream ecosystem that life is gradually returning to the reconstructed dead meander channels. In the fall of 2007 river crabs and other fish and invertebrates appeared in those channels.
