Early Years European Specialisms
Start date: Jan 1, 2015, End date: Dec 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This submission to the second VET call within the UK for mobilities is to complement an earlier successful application and wider the curriculum areas that staff development opportunities are available for. The activities of this project will be delivered in conjunction with Omina, our Finish partner, with which we have had previous involvement with. They are the Joint Authority of Education in Espoo Region, and are a multisectoral educational organisation owned by municipalities of Espoo, Kauniaianen and Kirkkonummi. The activity consists of 3 flows, each for two staff, to train within the Early Years context in Finland. Scandinavian countries are often famed for spending more time in the outdoors in all weathers, integrating learning and development between indoor activities and outdoor activities. In addition to this the Finish education system has been ranked as one of the best in the world. The three flows of staff exchanges proposed in this application would allow staff the opportunity to job shadowing and observe the early years environment and understand how the system used in the Forest School environment differ from our own context in the United Kingdom. These initial staff training opportunities would form the basis of knowledge that would better inform new and innovative approaches to the development of curriculum in our College. Noticeable differences that would be important to review include the option to continue pre-schooling to the age of 7, less testing at earlier ages, lower levels of Government/Local Authority measurement and control, learning through more integration in outdoor experiences that include more child-initiated activities and less staff-initiated activities. A particular focus would be with regard to new developments in preschool/ primary curriculum literacy and numeracy in Finland. This activity would be seen as a first step in a longer term partnership that would allow the progression of student exchanges and sustainable partnership opportunities on curriculum development and training that would be extended to other mutual partners of both parties to this activity.
