Dublin Simon Community
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Dublin Simon Community works to prevent and address homelessness in Dublin and have recently started providing services in the surrounding counties. We provide services at all stages of homelessness. The rough sleeper team and soup run operate 365 days of the year, encouraging rough-sleepers to access accommodation, health and social welfare services. We currently have 10 residential services ranging from emergency accommodation, supported housing and alcohol treatment services. We have visiting support services which work with people at risk of becoming homeless and those recently moved out of homelessness to prevent reoccurring homelessness. Our Participation and Development service aims to support our clients to access training and opportunities for personal development. EVS volunteers carry out their placements in our high support housing projects based at Chester House and Riversdale and our residential recovery (alcohol treatment) service. The housing services provide accommodation to men and women who are long-term homeless, and who through assessment, have been deemed ‘unable to live independently’. Residents have high mental health, physical health, drug and/or alcohol support needs. The service focuses on ending the cycle of homelessness and residents are taught life skills to increase their ability to maintain independent or semi-independent living. The aim of our recovery rehabilitation programme to allow people to address their addiction and behaviors as a barrier to moving out of homelessness. Dublin Simon Community has a well established full time volunteering programme and over 70 volunteers come through the programme on an annual basis. We currently host 4 EVS volunteers per year. Volunteers undertake placements of 9 – 12 months duration. Volunteers are at the core of the Dublin Simon Community's work. They work alongside professional staff to deliver vital services to people who are homeless. Volunteers receive ongoing training and support throughout their placement and there is an emphasis on reflective practice and formal and non-formal learning. EVS volunteers placed in Dublin Simon Community will get the opportunity to work with people of varied nationality and with diverse backgrounds. As well as the opportunity to get an in depth experience of Irish culture, volunteers will work alongside or live with people from different parts of Europe and the rest of the word. Full time volunteering placements challenge preconceptions and inform the volunteer around issues surrounding homelessness such as addictions and mental health.
