Docent ontwikkeling (English pronunciation)
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our school has a need for an improved English language education. One of the main points in this is the 'speaking English' part of the lessons. Research by our English department has shown that this part is not yet up to its full potential. At the moment our English department does not have all the necessary knowledge to improve this. The management team together with the English department have asked a teacher to take the course 'Pronunciation for English Language Teachers' at the University of Edinburgh. This in order to acquire the necessary knowledge that will lead to an improved English language education. The teacher, Wilfred Berkhof, is an innovative and motivated English language teacher. The teacher is also the driving force behind the project to improve the 'speaking English' teaching. The course 'Pronunciation for English Language Teachers' is a two week course in Edinburgh, Scotland in which the participants develop a sound theoretical base concerning English pronunciation. As well as learning a large number of pronunciation techniques and activities which may be appropriate to their own teaching situation. And finally the participants will work on their own English pronunciation as well. the teacher will also support his fellow English language teachers with organising etwinning projects in order to further the internationalisation of our English classes. The teacher will share his acquired knowledge with English language teacher from his own school as well as from other schools. Within his own school he will share the acquired knowledge and skills aby organising a workshop (activities and pronunciation techniques). And by writing a 'speaking English' development plan as part of the general improvement project. This will describe how the acquired knowledge and skills on pronunciation can be incorporated in the the English lesson. The teacher will share his aquired knowledge with outside English teachers by giving a presentation about the subject op pronunciation at a next TeachMeet English Teachers. Our end goal is to greatly improve the 'speaking English' education that our pupils receive at our school. The knowledge and skills which the teacher will acquire at this course will help him to better teach the English pronunciation to his pupils. The improvements will not just be limited to this one teacher, but will, thanks in part to the writing of the improvement plan, spread over the whole English department. To finally provide our pupils with an improved English language education.
