Diversity at school
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

VTI Poperinge is a middle sized secondary school which offers technical and professional education. Since recent years we face more and more diversity in terms of immigrants, intolerance and racism, prejudices against female pupils in technical schools, gender diversity, the social background and skills of our students. Their cognitive skills show big differences as well. The forthcoming educational reform will only invigorate this diversity. By participating in this course, the participating team firstly hopes to acquire knowledge, insight and skills concerning diversity and secondly hopes to establish contacts with other institutions and organizations to exchange ideas. Ultimately an international exchange project on diversity - a first in the school's history - is our goal. Considering the specific needs of our school the participating team in this course is very diverse and complementary in composition : two teachers, both experienced in the second and third grade of technical and professional education, a grade coordinator and the school psychologist . The knowledge and experience will then be implemented in the educational project , the school care policy and the realization of cross-curricular goals . In everyday school life the practical implementation of this knowledge and experience will result in short and long term projects which generate basic skills and awareness about "diversity " among pupils and staff . In the long run we hope our pupils will have a more open minded view on 'diversity' in all its forms and also hope pupils will realize that ' being different ' is not an obstacle but an opportunity to grow both individually and as a society.
