Our school is situated in Drapetsona, a rural area with many immigrants, near Piraeus. The characteristic of our region is high unemployment due to the economic crisis. Small industrial units were closed, the shipbuilding zone and the fertilizer factory have stopped their operation. The school has a lot of students of the Muslim community having Greek citizenship (15%). Meanwhile, the school has been included in the ‘integration programme’ of the Ministry of Education and has gathered students with specific learning difficulties from the wider area of Piraeus (12% of all students). The majority of our students treat school as an opportunity for a better future, but there is also a large number of students who have learning difficulties and specific needs, sometimes linked to their social background and the economic situation of their families; there are also students diagnosed with learning disabilities. Lack of education condemns vulnerable student groups in low qualifications, unemployment and inequality. The diversity of our students dictates different ways of teaching approach. Specifically our teachers should be properly trained and prepared to support all children in their learning process and their socialization, training methods should be designed specifically towards these groups of students and the school should obtain the organizational capacity to prevent early school leaving, school violence and to smoothly integrate all pupils. Our project includes attendance of four different seminars, which all belong to our school's strategy for integration and equal opportunities for all students. The seminars that we have selected are:"Diverse society - Diverse Classrooms" by Intercultural Iceland (Reykjavik), which has been specializing in intercultural education, fighting prejudice and stereotypes and organisation of teacher training courses."Diversity in Education" by Eekhoutcentrum based in Belgium. The organisation has a wide range of training programs for teachers that are organized in various European cities. The program selected will be organized in Lisbon, Portugal."Inclusion in European context" by Erasmus Plus Courses in Riga Latvia, specialising in teachers training in intercultural education and European cooperation."Prévenir les violences à l'école: comprendre pour agir. (Violence prevention in school. I understand to act) "by GERFEC in Strasbourg, France, with experience in teacher training and the organisation of transnational training programs in France and in other countries. These activities will offer to the participating teachers and by extension to the school the necessary knowledge, skills and competences so that they can undertake effectively the integration and support of students facing difficulties. We intend to incorporate the results of trainings in our school at various levels:1. through the development of personalised learning approaches, responding the particular needs of students with learning difficulties2. planning and implementing actions for the integration of students of the Muslim community and our students from families facing poverty and social exclusion3. integrated project planning for the prevention and treatment of school violence and delinquency.4. horizontal introduction of intercultural education elements and tolerance for diversity in various subjects5. addressing the phenomenon of early school leaving
