Diverse Europe at Work

The DEW project meets needs in European education for training materials in culturaldiversity. The standard, range and penetration of diversity training is not satisfactory;the DEW project facilitates the implementation of appropriate training in the changingmulti-cultural workplace. The project will refine, extend and disseminate diversity trainingmaterials sourced from two previous projects, share experience from previous projectsand ultimately promote diversity training for all citizens by focusing on the workplace andby making intercultural communication a key competence in lifelong learning. The DEWproject outputs will extend existing materials in diversity to include disability, sexualorientation, and ageism. Using the media of print, web, CD and DVD, they will havewide applicability, accessibility, transferability and sustainability: Key DEW projectoutputs are: DEW Training Manual (print and CD), with localised versions in 8languages: EN, FI, SE, DE, LV, BG, Turkish, Russian); DEW Training DVD (in English, with subtitles in up to 12 languages – as above plus GR, NO, IT, PL); EuropeanCertificate in Diversity Training (print and CD); DEW Website (ICT); DEW Disseminationmaterials (print).A key result is that the DEW materials will assist trainers in adopting a learner-basedapproach to knowledge transfer, which will enhance and develop learners’ ability toexperience diversity as something which they can control, contribute to, and benefitfrom. The innovative DEW training materials will adapt pedagogical strategies takenfrom other sectors - such as human resource management, business training, andapplied linguistics - to diversity education. The DEW project will adapt the materials tothe local educational context in each participating country, to produce a complex yeteasily accessible set of materials. The European Certificate in Diversity Training willdraw on the successful curriculum model developed in the UNEC project and focus onthe resolution of conflict and misunderstandings in the workplace which arise fromcultural differences among the host and migrant workforces, as elaborated in the EIWproject. The envisaged impact of DEW materials will be to influence policy, training andbehaviour through their effective dissemination throughout the workplaces of Europe.
