Discovering Traditional Crafts Across Europe

The topic of the two-year project is discovering traditional crafts, some of which are slowly disappearing from today’s societies. Each term one common and one optional regional craft are covered by each school. The selected fields of craftsmanship are: pottery, agriculture, cooking, textile and paper decoration, carving or woodwork, metalwork or jewellery making. By researching the origins and development of these traditional crafts, our students, the young generation can learn about some of them, which were common in the time of their grandparents, discover the socio-geological-economic determination of their existence and near disappearance. During the two years of cooperation the students search for folk tales, legends, folk songs, poems in connection with the selected crafts, learn some of the songs, poems, illustrate them. They interview old people (grandparents, great-grandparents), visit local craftsmen, take photos of the jobs being done, finally, create their own pieces of work in workshops. These pieces are then displayed in a common exhibition at a project meeting, then they are exchanged and the resulting selection (a few pieces from each country) is showcased at each school. The background, history and development of the selected crafts is shown to the partners by means of PowerPoint presentations, viewed at the project meetings. Students share the knowledge gained and products made by way of ICT on a specific web site. Besides this the work of research and creation is documented in a book - one chapter devoted to each craft -, and in a digital photo album available on the common website, where all the digital materials have been uploaded.
