Discover Middle East
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Jun 1, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Discover Middle East is a Long term EVS project that takes place in Amman, Jordan. There will be 2 participants/volunteers from Estonia who volunteer in Jordan from October 1, 2014 – April 1, 2015 (6 months). Europe is becoming more and more multicultural however often people has very negative stereotypes or prejudices regarding other cultures, especially less know cultures as Arab. Estonia is not a popular migrant destination and therefore people are rarely connected with foreigners from Middle East. Often media reflection about Middle East is very biased viewpoint. Therefore people have luck of understanding of Arab culture and Islam. This project will encourage dialogue between two very different cultures – Estonian and Arab world. Volunteers will work daily hand by hand with local volunteers and community and will be able to learn its traditions and culture and later distribute this knowledge back in Estonia. The objectives of project are to encourage intercultural dialogue between youth from Estonia and Jordan; to develop cooperation between organizations from Middle East and Europe; to enhance youth mobility in Estonia by providing European Voluntary Service in another country and to develop youth and children soft skills and English skills. The main activities planned for the volunteers: English lessons for kids in Palestinian refugee camp; assisting in project proposal development, promoting EVS and Erasmus+ program to youth in Jordan and establish new cooperation with other organization from Europe and Arab countries. Volunteers will do their activities together with other volunteers from different countries. Very rarely both volunteers from Estonia will lead the same activities because WE Center wants to encourage more intercultural dialogue. The project will have significant impact on participants in refugee camp and local youth in Jordan. It is expected that volunteers will help to increase children English skills in camp, increase their understanding about different cultures and develop their skills to work in team. Activities will increase intercultural dialogue in local society.
