Disaster Information System of ALPine regions (DIS-ALP)
Start date: Jun 30, 2003, End date: Jun 29, 2006 PROJECT  FINISHED

The management of natural risks in a mountainous environment and the prevention of disasters requires a broad and accessible information basis about former disasters, which is important for interdisciplinary and interregional research and for decisions to prevent disasters and deal with natural risks. But the information needs - defined by the practitioners of spatial planning, risk prevention and catastrophe management and in-line with the needs of the affected people - are currently not met. DIS-ALP will focus on the solution of this documentation and information gap about natural disasters:· with the refinement and standardisation of existing methods for the documentation of disasters and the implementation on a GIS-based web platform,· with instruction materials and training of persons involved in event documentation and· with new and innovative technological tools for the data collection in the field (integrating GPS, PDA and online maps).
