Digitālā pratība izglītības kvalitātes konkurētspējas veicināšanai
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Since the school year 2011 / 2012 Daugavpils State Gymnasium has paid special attention to the use of ICT in the teaching process by focusing on equipping classrooms with modern technologies (interactive whiteboards) and offering further education courses for teachers (use of interactive whiteboards; use of the Internet resources in the teaching/learning process). Teachers of Sciences and Mathematics have a diverse range of digital teaching materials which were made up in the frames of a state-supported program. The usage of these resources has significantly improved the quality of the curriculum - an interdisciplinary approach, visualization and practical, real life related activities contribute to students' understanding and develop their skills of investigation.Due to the lack of skills to use ICT, teachers of other subjects cannot fully use all of the possibilities offered by modern technologies. In the courses offered to the teaching staff (see C.1.3.) a general overview of ICT capability was given, but it offered only a minimum of practical skills. The use of ICT in the teaching process depends on each teacher's individual needs to master digital skills and use them in the teaching process. Thus, different quality of teaching/learning process is offered in different subjects at school that does not improve neither students’ nor the school’s competitiveness as a whole. In addition, when using new technologies, it is essential to change teaching methods and techniques. Until now, the methods used and the technical equipment make it impossible for students to master necessary key competencies in the modern working environment. In addition, by 2016 all classrooms in Daugavpils State Gymnasium will have been equipped with the latest technologies, creating an interactive learning environment for the acquisition of digital materials. Therefore, in order to ensure a high level of the quality of the teaching process in gymnasium, which corresponds to the actual labor market demands for workers, the staff needs acquairing practical digital skills and the use of appropriate techniques in further education courses.Teachers of different subjects will take part in the courses, thereby covering both language and social studies and history and science subjects blocks. In addition, it will give them all major idea of the currently available technologies in the classroom (tablet PCs, phones, social media), thus bringing teaching/learning process to the real working environment. The course program is meant to aquire necessary methods and techniques working with the modern technologies to ensure qualitative interactive learning and teaching process. In addition, teachers will work together with colleagues from different European countries dirung these courses, learn from other colleagues’ practical experience in developing materials, search for opportunities for cooperation in different subjects, thus expanding intercultural dimension of gymnasium. After the courses, teachers then will act as multipliers within one year teaching colleagues of other subjects and, if necessary, other school teachers. At the end of the course, participants of the courses will organize workshops (2h) once a month, until all the school teachers will be trained in using both mobile phones and tablet PCs and the use of social media opportunities for the teaching process. Course participants together with colleagues will develop lesson plans and worksheets in their subjects by using the acquired technologies. The lessons will be observed and then later discussed. Information on the quality management in the interactive teaching and learning process will also be provided. Particular attention will be devoted to a discussion about change of training techniques and methods in the teaching process. All created materials will be collected in a file so that all the ideas and samples can be used at any time. The most successful lesson samples will be presented to the colleagues from other schools during pedagogical council meetings and seminars. Teachers involved in the project have never used Lifelong Learning or Erasmus + programs before, thus they will be able to assess the practical benefits of intercultural education and maybe start cooperation with colleagues from other schools in their subjects.Basic digital skills (and other competencies acquired during the project) and meaningful use of these competencies will facilitate the teaching/learning process and competitiveness of students and teachers and school.
