'Diction', a European multimedia language project, will contribute to further development and implementation of web-based language learning in Europe. Modules comprising study tasks, with access to information tools such as dictionaries, assignments and a platform for on-line communication with other students, will be designed. These diction modules correspond to European standards for educational multimedia and will include web-based modules for Open and Distance Learning. The course material will be tested and implemented in the curricula of the national language programmes of vocational and adult education in each project partner's Member State. The designation of 2001 as the European Year of Languages will provide opportunities to disseminate prototypes. The final product will be disseminated through regional and national networks, international language conferences and the Internet.
