Development of Infrastructure of Regular Mammography Screening in Hódmezővásárhely, Szentes and Arad (DIMS)
Start date: Dec 31, 2012, End date: Aug 30, 2014 PROJECT  FINISHED

Cancer is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the EU and it requires the implementation of an efficient policy and health service coordination between Member States. In Hungary and Romania, the mortality of cancer patients is among the highest in the EU and breast cancer is a growing culprit.Though legislative initiatives exist to mitigate the mortality rate of breast cancer patients, public health spending is proven to be insufficient in both countries to cover these needs. These facts call for implementation of actions of awareness raising, prevention and early diagnosis of breast cancer. The main objective of DIMS is to mitigate the mortality rate of breast cancer in the border area (Hódmezővásárhely, Szentes and Arad subregion). The goal is to increase the number of scanned patients and thus making possible an early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of breast cancer, while reducing the mortality rate of the patients. These results will be reached by developing unified professional and organizational guidelines for the medical attendance of the three locations and by purchasing adequate medical tools.Target groups: breast cancer is the no. 1 from the point of view of occurrence within the female population aged between 45-65 years. The DIMS project is focusing on two main target groups:First of all it focuses on women aged between 45-65 years, more specifically women in underprivileged socio-economic situation (also reaching out for the roma community members). The aim of the project in a longer term (till 2019) is to screen up to 70% in the two Hungarian locations (11 000 patients) and up to 40% (9440 patients) of the target group in Arad. This means that in total approximately 20 000 women will be screened till 2019 thanks to DIMS project. Women will be involved in the project through bottom up initiatives such as health consciousness surveys.Secondly, DIMS is focusing on the training of medical professionals and reached approximately 100 medical professionals and 20 volunteers in total for the free locations. The joint medical training will enhance the harmonization of medical services and facilitate cross-border medical treatments. The main specific activities of the project are: surveys in three towns, equipment purchase and joint equipment and knowledge sharing, trainings, seminars, final event, 2 joint working teams elaborated 8 joint protocols. Expected Results: Main results: equipment purchased- 3 digital mammographs (LP, P1, P2), 3 ultrasound systems (LP, P1, P2), 3 Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS - LP, P1, P2), 3 mammographic scanners (LP, P1, P2), 2 biopsy units (LP, P2), 4 workstations (3 LP, 1 P2),2 compatibility software (LP, P2), 5 dictaphones and voice recognition software (LP); 14 brochures; 6 press releases; 7 press conferences; 1 project homepage.
