Development of Border Infrastructure between Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (BORDER.IN)

Development of efficient and transparent customs services are among the important tools for reducing barriers to doing business, as perceived by investors and traders. However, it is noticed that almost daily there are delays in processing people or goods at the customs offices of Evzoni/Gevgelija-Bogorodica & Doirani/ Dojran. These delays cause traffic congestions that have negative impact in the economies of both countries. The main reasons for the delays are:-Non-functional arrangement of offices and control rooms-Old technological equipment-Lack of sufficient lighting in the road and the customs area-Narrow and poorly maintained road in Doirani-Damaged electronic traffic barriersDevelopment of the customs service is the ultimate goal set forth in BORDER-IN. This project aims to support the customs facilities in Doirani and Bogorodica, as well as their special operations, speeding up customs clearance of goods, processing of passengers, and prevention of smuggling. The modernization of the customs services in both countries will primarily be facilitated by infrastructure development. The key outcomes of the project are the renovations of the customs offices in Doirani and the administrative building Bogorodica Border Crossing Point. Finally, the project will produce a complete set of dissemination materials, including project leaflets and folders, posters, web portal and two open to the public conferences.
