Development of a training path for European Furniture Experts in Designing and Manufacturing of AAL Integrated Furniture for the Care and Support of Elderly and Disabled People.
Start date: Oct 1, 2013,

The fast-growing elderly population in Europe and its care needs require solutions like AAL (Ambient Assisted Living) to ensure economical sustainability. AAL is emerging as a set of tools for care of the elderly and disabled capable of improving their quality of life. Furniture has certain features that can improve the non-intrusive monitoring of users and interaction of AAL systems, which represents a huge opportunity for the furniture industry and to reduce unemployment. Unfortunately, there is a lack of skilled workers and training programs. However, it has been found that most of the furniture organizations do not have a skilled staff for designing and manufacturing products for this sector according to the specific safety and mechanical needs (CE marked, ISO Standards, etc) that these products must satisfy in order to fulfil legal and safety European regulations because of the lack of training programs in this field.VETAAL will develop a novel curriculum and innovative VET materials to train furniture sector professionals and students in design and manufacturing of AAL furniture for the elderly and disabled. The main outputs will be: definition of training path, common curriculum and learning contents; development of training materials and e-learning platform. A Pilot Test and Quality Assurance Plan will be implemented to ensure a high quality. The consortium is composed by 10 partners from 6 different countries (Spain, Slovenia, Poland, Italy, Austria and United Kingdom). This geographical balance is a guarantee for the successful project objectives and results dissemination and exploitation, covering a big European area.VETAAL will benefit the overall European society by training the furniture industry to take the world lead in AAL, and by providing tools for the aging population sustainability.
