Development for health
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2019 PROJECT  FINISHED

“Development for health: the EU role on health explained to students of health-related professions” is a module sketched on 3 parallel tiers, at University of Milano-Bicocca, years 2016-2019.The first tier consists of lectures, delivered mostly by young experts in the field of environmental health (1st year), nutrition (2nd year) and healthcare services (3rd year): the EU has legal competence in these health-related fields, and their analysis enables students to have a structured approach, applicable to other issues of EU competence. Frontal lectures, non-formal learning sessions and practical activities will be scheduled within the framework of a summer school, whose attendance is open to medical students and students of health-related professions. The second tier focuses on research. In light of DG Research efforts to address societal challenges, research options given to the summer school participants will focus on societal questions (each specific question will answer to the broad question: “Is our environment/nutrition/healthcare system good for us?”). Open data, and data collected by our Local Health Authority (LHA), will be analysed in aggregate form, with cross-sectional analytical tools. The third tier aims at fostering connections between the participants and the external environment (other universities, NGOs and civil society): during the summer school, students are asked to produce a policy position paper on healthcare professionals and their role in addressing EU challenges; each year, the position paper will be shared with health policy makers and with civil society. Internships in prestigious institutions, to which experts are affiliated, will be offered. A website will support the dissemination of educational materials and key documents. It will contain information and contacts for other health science universities willing to develop a similar module. It will be updated with relevant events.
