Developing Language Skills in French
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our project 'Developing language skills in French", was developed to ensure that staff at St Peter's Catholic Primary School in Stockport are equipped to teach French following the introduction of languages at Key Stage 2 in September 2014. Staff competence and confidence in speaking French was low and French was taught by the MFL coordinator or a visiting native speaker. However, staff were motivated to develop their skills and increase their confidence in speaking French in order that they could become more involved in teaching French at St. Peter's. It was decided that immersion courses in France would be the optimum means to achieve these objectives. Two staff were selected to participate in in-service training abroad (France). The identified staff had different levels of attainment and confidence in speaking French and the selected courses allowed them develop in areas appropriate to their needs. They gathered authentic resources for use in the classroom, learnt about the culture, brought fresh ideas back to the classroom and developed their language skills through being surrounded by the language and taught by native-speaker tutors. Methodology and pedagogy sessions included using songs and rhymes, games, drama and stories to teach language to young learners. The increased use of ICT has enhanced language teaching and learning and motivated pupils to become independent learners e.g. research into French speaking countries on the Internet. The course has also enabled teachers to plan and assess to ensure progression and support transition to high school. Staff are more familiar with key documents e.g. Curriculum 2014 and how to meet the requirements of the new foreign language Programme of Study. As a result of allowing two staff to attend training abroad and disseminating their skills and knowledge: 1. Confidence levels in speaking French have increased. 2. Competence in speaking French have improved. 3. Both participants have a desire for further language learning. 4. New ideas have been brought back to school which are enhancing teaching and learning. 5. Increased use of ICT is supporting language learning, motivating pupils and impacting on results. 6. Ways to cater for all learning styles, ensuring age-appropriate, quality teaching of listening, speaking, reading and writing have been adopted by the staff. 7. A climate of sharing expertise and skills, especially in language teaching has been developed. 8. There is now collaboration in planning and teaching French. 9. Pupils enjoyment of language lessons has increased. 10. The school celebrates pupils' achievements in French at Assemblies and has entered competitions set by the LEA e.g. designing a poster to promote languages. In the longer term we expect that teachers will be keen to practise and improve their language skills and pupils leaving St. Peter's will continue to have a love for languages and a desire to use their skills in later life.
