Developing Language skills and Methodologies for English teachers at Primary Level

Backround - Roenbaekskolen is a primary and secondary school that serves 714 students and is the largest school in the municipality of Favrskov in Denmark. Recent legislation has hastened the need for the school to create a comprehensive English learning programme specifically designed to address the needs of 6-7 year old pupils, to help them to better contribute to their community, and to prepare them for the challenges of living in a global society.Objectives -Roenbaekskolen Primary and Secondary School want to advance their ability to deliver excellent learning in English by utizing the knowledge and experience gained from the ETI Malta training.Number / profile of participants -Pia Mikkelsen is our nominated participant and she is ideally suited to lead and develop our English learning programme having worked as a qualified English teacher in the United Kingdom and Denmark. She holds a Post Graduate Certificate of Education in Primary Teaching, which she gained at Greenwich University in the UK and in addition to Danish and English, Pia has a conversational ability in German. Having travelled the world extensively, Pia is enthusiastic about supporting pupils to gain the best possible understanding of English as an access to an increasingly global society. She is well respected by her colleagues and the Favrskov community. Description of activities -Pia Mikklesen will attend the ETI Malta on behalf of Roenbaekskolen Primary and Secondary School to gain new and innovative skills in the teaching of English. The aim is for Pia to create new methodologies and competencies that will form the foundation of a progressive approach to teaching English. Methodology -Roenbaekskolen Primary and Secondary School has a dessemination plan where local and regional results will be distributed by the means of In-set days, training sessions and the school intranet. In addition our language teachers have specialized collaboration with other schools in the area. These groups meet several times a year to share teaching methodologies and to discuss pedagogical approaches and challenges in language teaching. The collaboration is designed to upgrade the in-school and local language teachers and to raise and comform teaching standards by disseminating the new teaching methods and techniques.Results and impactPia Mikkelsen will create a Personal Development Action Plan, and select tools and activities which will establish methodologies to be used in the classroom at Roenaekskolen. She will also join the ETI Malta Teacher Training Facebook community, which will give Roenbaekskolen the opportunity to network and have contact with trainers, colleagues and participants from other courses.The leadership at Roenbaekskolen will hold an evaluation meeting with Pia Mikkelsen to hear about the course and to talk through her Personal Development Action Plan. This will form the basis of a dissemination plan for the rest of 2016 -2017, with meetings for teachers and the teaching sessions for the pupils. The programme will have a positive impact on students not just at Roenaekskolen Primary and Secondary School but at schools in the Favrskov municipality.Longer term benefitsAttending the ETI Malta will contribute significantly to the development of new methodologies and competencies of learning English in this part of Denmark. The diverse international population will benefit hugely from establishing a progressive standard in teaching English and ultimately in preparing our pupils to better contribute to our community and to access an increasingly global society.
