Develop strategies for sustainable tourism
Start date: Dec 31, 2012,
Develop strategies for a sustainable tourism by using available sources of information such as the YEPAT database or the Nordic Culture Point. Efforts shall be made in order to improve the accessibility to the natural, cultural and historical heritage for tourism and to enhance a common identity of the Baltic Sea Region. Achievements: The focus of this flagship project was mainly on developing and supporting sustainable tourism, whereas a special emphasis was placed on rural areas on accessibility and use of natural & cultural heritage and on enhancing the process of developing a common identity of the Baltic Sea Region. Topics to be covered in this flagship project included i. a. a strategic cooperation with BSR stakeholders and organisations, a collection of good practices on sustainable tourism and provision of useful knowledge and instruments as an updated online tool “sustainability check for tourism projects”.Strategic cooperation with stakeholders from the entire Baltic Sea Region has been one of the most important actions and shall be permanently continued - to influence policies and to strengthen activities for sustainable tourism development. In this regard, a Strategy Paper on Sustainable Tourism Development in the Baltic Sea region was worked out in 2011, also thanks to the support of Baltic 21 under the umbrella of the Council of the Baltic Sea States. The Strategy Paper was presented and its practical implications discussed during the 6th Baltic Sea Tourism Forum in Ringsted/DK. In this process, the lead partner had to take over a coordinating function. Especially the collaboration with other projects under the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 enabled synergies and possibilities to realise relevant actions, e.g.:- The project EcoRegion collected good practices on sustainable tourism development. A free accessible database provides information and gives support to use existing knowledge, methods and experiences.- Eight BSR National Parks implemented the project Parks & Benefits. All of them aimed at getting certificated as a “EUROPARC”, i.e. all parks committed themselves to comply with the requirements of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas.- AGORA 2.0 aimed at creating solutions for sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage potentials, involving diverse BSR stakeholders and to make the BSR more visible as a tourist destination. Some important outputs are:• BASTIS - The Baltic Sea Heritage Tourism Information Service • BSR wide online ranking “Common Identity Profile” – • The Six Baltic Sea Wonders contest • Publications "Treasures of the Baltic Sea" ISSN 2194-8224• Attraction analysis and Study on Visitor Perceptions at heritage sites.
