Destrezas y CLIL sobre el escenario
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our high school is situated in the south east of Gran Canaria (Spain), where tourism and foreign languages play an important role in our economic development. Because of this, the staff at IES El Doctoral feels the need of acquiring new motivating methodologies focused on improving our linguistic competences as a complement of the curriculums involved in different subjects of the CLIL program. The staff involved in the project Erasmus+ KA1, SKILLS AND CLIL ON STAGE, has tried to contribute to reach a better teaching and learning of the English Language at school. Through these two years, these teachers have developed different activities to encourage the use of English at communication. The age range of the participants in the project “SKILLS AND CLIL ON STAGE” goes from 35 to 55 years old. Two of them belong to CLIL program and the other four are members of the English Department. None of them has attended any courses of foreign languages in a European country before, so they want to improve and put into practice all the communicative skills. The participating teachers have decided to choose different structured courses within the offer of IPC Exeter organization in order to fulfill all our educational needs: - Developing Oral Fluency in the English Language Classroom (Secondary). From 29/03/15 to 11/04/15. - Better English for Teachers. From 26/04/2015 to 09/05/2015. - Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) – Practical Ideas for the Classroom. From 14/06/2015 to 27/06/2015 - Drama techniques in the English Language Classroom. From 5/07/2015 to 18/70/2015 - Creative methodology for teachers. From 16/05/2016 to 27/05/2016 - Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) – Practical Ideas for the Classroom. From 13/6/2016 to 24/06/2016 New techniques acquired in these courses have been applied on the different activities trying to innovate the methodology and focusing on reaching a better competence in foreign language and CLIL areas involved in the project. All this lets us check how students can express in a natural way and how they surpass their personal and linguistic limits. During these two years, the activities have been developed not only by participant teachers’ students but by students from ‘aula enclave’, basic vocational training students, and the rest of teachers and pupils from our high school. The final results of the application of these new innovating, active, creative methodologies have been disseminated by different channels: school theatre, Town Hall theatre, ‘III y IV Encuentros de Educación municipal’ (education fairs), promotion in primary and secondary schools, local television and radio, exchange with teachers from other countries, our blog and social networks. We have been provided with an area at the school hall to show everything we did, and for the families to see the product of our work. Our blog (https://ka1doctoral.wordpress.com) shows the different ilustrative examples of our work: publicity, scholar drama exhibition, Europe Day, interactive electronic games, Maths school Day, Halloween, Poppy Day, Gender Violence International Day; Christmas decoration (origami, European Nativity scene using recycled materials, recycled paper structures,…) Peace Day, Book Day,… Our main intention has been the expansion of all we have learned to get a better acquisition of the English Language and the diffusion through the means we had never explored before. The impact on the teachers has awaken a new motivation and enthusiasm to face the educational work because of the experience of exchanging ideas with participants from other countries. The material, resources and teaching techniques given by everyone have renewed our vision of the daily work in the classroom. We have tried to spread this excitement not only in our surroundings but also in other schools and members of the educational community. As long-term benefit, we hope the students feel more motivated at studying, in order to make the current early-leaving school decrease and to improve their fluency in the spoken English in a natural way. Taking into account that we live in a global world, we hope the students will be able to use the language, not only in local areas, but in future mobilities to different countries around the world. Thus, the acquired knowledge will help them to overcome their personal linguistic limitations that stop their development in communicating skills, in the classroom as well as in their life. This experience has made us reflect about our teaching practise and we would like that future participants could see how motivating could be working this way. We encourage everyone to take part in this kind of projects.
