"The new technologies and applications, e.g. in optoelectronics, microelectronics, biotechnology and medicine necessitate accessibility of quite modern synthetic polymeric materials with continuously more sophisticated, well-defined properties and structures. One of the most challenging tasks in current chemical research is the creation of catalytic system which allows to obtain stereo-regular linear polymers with defined units. Functionalized norbornenes (NBEs), such as: exo-n(alkyl/arylene)-norbornene dicarboxyimides, 5-norbornene-exo,exo-2,3-dimethanol or 5-norbornene-exo,exo-2,3-dicarboxylic acid will be extensively used to construct ‘designer’ ROMP materials with controlled architectures (homopolymers, diblock and triblock copolymers) via well established living polymerisation (ring opening metathesis polymerisation - ROMP) in the presence of Grubbs ruthenium initiators. NBE-based ROMP materials including supported definite and reactive groups for organic synthesis (-hydroxy, -carboxy or -silyloxy), specific chromophores for photo- and optoelectronic devices will be synthesised. After that, the advanced study of photophysical and mechanical properties of all polymeric materials will be explored. This project may deliver a new approach for production of new functional macromolecules and the final results will permit to find practical applications in manufacturing."
