In a society where we are increasingly communicating with image, the need for deep visual communication skills becomes essential. Requirements for quality in visual communication are high because of the complexity of realities and stories being communicated. At the same time, we are facing major changes in today's media landscape. Digitization has moved over a part of media consumption from paper newspapers and television to the internet and smartphones, ad revenue is distributed over more media and media companies intensify and digitize their operations. Many media companies are forced to cut down firmly in their operations. One speaks of an industry in deep crisis where newspapers terminates the entire photographer staffs and venerable media companies closes down or merges. The labor market in visual communication is no longer what it used to be and the number of permanent jobs decreases rapidly. Professionals in visual communication therefore need new tools and skills to be able to navigate in a labor market where they must create their own jobs. At the same time the digitization offers challenges of keeping a figuratively high quality as well as technically. It is no longer enough to be artistically talented, you also need to possess deep technical expertise, for example in post-processing and -editering. There is a need for a Nordic center of excellence for visual communication with expertise in working business models specific to the industry as well as advanced technical knowledge. Therefore Novia, Folkuniversitet and Mediskolerne now initiates the joint project "The Digital Bridge - cooperation in a changing media landscape."
