Decision Support System for flood risks alert in Strymon/Struma River Basin (RIVERALERT)

The RIVERALERT project addresses a great challenge for both countries to establish an operational and sustainable telemetric water and sediment quantity monitoring system for water directorates and civil protection authorities in the Strymon/Struma riverbasin.The overall objective of the project is the development of supportive infrastructures and tools that will implement water and sediment quantity monitoring of the Strymon/ Struma river basin and will facilitate the competent water and civil protection authorities of Greece and Bulgaria in implementing WFD, Floods, and spatial planning Directives and the Desertification Convention.The core outputs of the project are:1. Common technical specifications of the monitoring network and e-tools2. A fully functional telemetric networks in both the Greek and Bulgarian part3. Common telemetric data processing and harmonization methodologies4. Expert System for predicting flood and erosion situations on a real time basis in both the Greek and Bulgarian part5. e-tools and infrastructure to support competent authorities in water and sediment quantity monitoring and management (database, webIMS, expert system, decision rooms) in both the Greek and Bulgarian part. Expected Results: Results: 1. Civil protection against floods and erosion; 2. Increased capacity of competentauthorities; 3. Improved water management policies including planning and evaluation ofeffectiveness using the telemetric data; 4. Comparable, continuous and reliable water and sediment quantity datasets;5. Infrastructural improvement and development6. Real time data to support water policies and water users (from outputs: 3 and 4)7. Public awareness and increased citizens sense of security and safety (from outputs: 6and 10)
