Damage of the historical works or transport of the Atlantic coast due to the marine environment: method of diagnosis, repair and maintenance. (MEDACHS)
Start date: Dec 31, 2004, End date: Dec 30, 2007 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project aims to provide the government services with a decision-making tool in their task of maintaining historic buildings or structures used in transport. It is setting up 3 major studies. The first is a study into the causes of damage to the different materials in a marine atmosphere and environment, the second studies the damage to structures and the third consists in developing a decision-making tool and implementing it on monuments in the Atlantic Area. The project intends to conduct several studies: on stones, steels, concrete and wood, etc. A website will be developed during the project. This site will be free of charge and will put online information intended for SME and local authorities. At the end of the project the site will be a means of exchange between the SME on the one hand and the research centres on the other hand, but also between the government services and the research centres. Achievements:  - Drafting of a good practice guide in the 4 languages of the programme on the protection and repair of stone, steel, concrete and wood - Mechanical tests on stone, steel, concrete and wood (study of the measuring methods, and the speed of damage) - Development of new measuring methods - Diagnostics of buildings and structures. Measurements of the degree of damage to structures built with various materials (stone, steel, concrete and wood) - Study of the reliability of very damaged structures and implementation of a kinetic study of deterioration for each material in a future model. Study of the deteriorations and the influence of a possible intervention - Development of maintenance tools and decision-making tools. - Creation of a website: www.irg.tcd.ie and www.medachs.u-bordeaux1.fr Good practices were put online to implement various products (protection, corrosion). Creation of a help card for diagnostics. - Awareness and information campaign directed at local authorities - Organisation of 8 conferences - 12 scientific papers in the British and international press, 5 papers in scientific or technical journals in France and Portugal - Diffusion of 2 booklets (70 copies), 600 prospectuses, 200 CDs, 25 posters, 1 radio programme.
