Current and future challenges of European integration
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The chair – Current and Future Challenges of European Integration (CEI)- intends to provide a global and interdisciplinary understanding of the challenges of European integration, promoting excellence in teaching and research in 2 pillars–(1)internal market and competition policy;(2)European citizenship–which are considered priority areas in the EU by their high academic relevance and current policy developments and will dominate the political agenda in the future as it is outlined in the 2020 Strategy. Teaching activities intend to address undergraduate and graduate students that are not usually in contact with these subjects. The Faculty of Law of the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP) was one of the first Law Schools in Portugal to teach EEC Law, beginning to offer mandatory syllabus on the subject in the 1990s, in addition, UCP has been celebrating numerous protocols with foreign Universities, namely with brazilian ones, attracting to undergraduate and graduate courses (namely the Master in European and International Law and the PhD Course) a significant number of foreign students with degrees in business administration and management, international relations, education, languages, increasing the need to deepen the teaching and research in EU subjects. In research the chair will benefit from the resources of the Católica Research Centre for the Future of Law, a research unit with more than 40 senior researchers, in which Prof. Sofia Pais is the Executive Director. The chair will strengthen teaching activities and interdisciplinary and transnational research and will (1)reform the existing syllabi;(2)create a new seminar, called ‘Current and future challenges of European integration’ in the Master;(3)organize every year, conferences, including an international (4)conduct a comparative and interdisciplinary research, focusing primarily on the above mentioned research areas.(5)The results will be presented in 2 books published namely by the Católica publisher.
