Cudzie jazyky v popularizácii vedy
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Foreign Languages in the Popularization of Science project was implemented by five teachers - a teacher of physics and informatics, two English teachers, a teacher of the German language and one French language teacher. All of them were interested in their own professional growth, in gaining an overview of the latest methods of teaching foreign languages and science, and in applying them in their own teaching practice. The main activities of the proposed project were orientated on methodological courses in the UK, Spain, France, Germany and Malta. After their completion, teachers prepared teaching materials (English-German-French-Slovak glossary of natural science terminology; worksheets for students with the aim to acquire and remember such terminology; a database of videos featuring natural science topics in a foreign language; relevant student worksheets for selected videos that use CLIL; physical experiments in foreign languages and their dramatization; multimedia tales with science content) that have been used in dual-focus lessons. All the materials are available to all teaching staff. The review of the outputs can be found on the project website. The authors consider the outputs of this project as some basis, which will be supplemented in the next school years, because the original idea to include the topic of science and technology in foreign languages and use different language texts and media in scientific disciplines appears to be useful from the long term perspective. Authors presented their know-how and pupils´ outcomes in open lessons which were attended by external teachers and pupils of primary schools within annually organized the Open Day and Rayman´s week. The novelty was a methodological day for teachers of grammar school. Authors of the project hope that they have laid the foundations for an interesting platform where school teachers will annually exchange experience and good practices gained in different projects and in lifelong learning. The aim of the cooperation of language and science teachers was and is to prepare future graduates to manage their knowledge, gained from physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology present in two foreign languages and during their high school studies to prepare for internships Erasmus + abroad during their university studies. After a year of the project the assumption has been confirmed that foreign language teaching gained a practical dimension in the context of new communication situations (scientific discoveries, interesting facts from the life of scientists, foreign language documentaries ...). It has been a positive change for the students as well because such language lessons prepared students for the topics that have been subsequently taught in a foreign or native language at physics and chemistry lessons. The project has also been a challenge for language teachers – they found out that they better understand Faraday, Coulomb and or X-ray discovery when studying the materials in a language that is close to them.
