CSÖRNÖC-HERPENYO

The purpose of the project was to find a comprehensive solution to improve the condition of the environment and improve the quality of life in the cross-border region. The objective was to apply new measures and procedures to the region, compliant with the EC watercourse revitalization program, promoting the revitalization and renaturalization of rivers in Europe. Main activities included: to establish environmentally favorable conditions of the Csörnöc-Herpenyo watercourse by bringing in water from the Raba River, which constitutes a prerequisite for the revitalization work; to clear out the drifts from escarpments in the basin and reverse the great rise in water levels caused by the closure of effluents due to regulation work; to create a water habitat in the inflow area; to remove the structures obstructing the free flow of water in the basin; to create a green belt along the entire flow of theriver; to preserve the biocenoses in water and on the banks, thus ensuring the preservation of the region´s biodiversity. Through consultations with Slovenian and Hungarian partners and experts, it was established that there are other rivers in the region for which the revitalization and renaturalization measures should be applied also. Achievements: Construction of an irrigation channel and an outlet valve, the water level rose 30 cm during the testing, 45 kilometers of the watercourse have been revitalized and a water biocenosis was created in the inflow area. The conducted project could serve as a model for cost-effective rehabilitation of natural habitats, which would definitely impact regional development. The natural characteristics of the Pomurje Region of Slovenia are very similar to the southern areas of the Zala and Vas counties. Once the border barriers were removed, the accumulated experience and know-how is now freely transferred to border areas of Slovenia.
