Cross-cultural neonatal VLE - The Development of a European Virtual Learning Environment for Neonatology

The project will create a European Neonatal Virtual Learning Environment for trainee doctors studying at postgraduate level. The project will support learner-centred, flexible and collaborative learning and the sharing of best practice across the EU, promoting access to lifelong learning, particularly to those in remote areas. Common on-line assessment tools will be further developed, in a step towards greater cross-border transparency of qualifications. End products will include a virtual learning environment, which will also serve as a portal for cross-cultural communication; IT-based induction programmes (using Computer Mediated Communication); a series of six interactive modules; new on-line assessment tools and an electronic portfolio. The curriculum will be in produced in EN and machine translations then adapted by partners. The developed course will be tested with a group of 50 trainee doctors and their tutors with internal and external evaluation influencing final course content. Both end products and the respective evaluation will be publicised at scientific and IT meetings on a national and European level. Project information bulletins will be published in newsletters, professional journals and on partner websites. One of the involved European Paediatric organisations further expects to host the facility beyond the lifetime of the project.
