CROSS-BORDER TOURISM DEVELOPMENT OF THE WESTKUST AND THE CÔTE D'OPALE
Start date: May 31, 2008, End date: Dec 30, 2012 PROJECT  FINISHED

The tourist offices in the coastal area between France and Flanders do not (or hardly) know each other. Moreover, the residents rarely cross the border. There is still a strong language barrier, in particular on the French side, where professionals rarely receive guests in Dutch. Cross-border communication is non-existent, though this would certainly attract new customers. To convince more visitors to visit their neighbours, the partners decided to jointly promote the area. This also involves improving reception facilities for foreign tourists, in particular developing adapted facilities for persons with specific needs (people with reduced mobility, visually impaired people, etc.). Achievements: A professional network was formed through the development of 6 cross-border introductory tours, 5 annual and 2 strategic meetings. The joint tourist promotion of the cross-border territory madethe general public familiar with the “from coast to coast” concept. The partners took part in many fairs in France and Belgium, developed communication tools, such as a common leaflet, pens, a tourist passport and USB sticks for journalists. There were two major print campaigns. To improve reception facilities for disabled people, the partners took action at various levels: they were aimed on the one hand at professionals and elected officials (design of a guide on the reception of people with disabilities, facility assessment visits, accessibility audit for tourism professionals, etc.), and on the other hand at people with disabilities (creation of a tourist product, publication of a flyer, etc.). A number of partners improved their reception facilities, Acmapor, for example, put in place visio-guides and the Rives de l’Aa tourism office acquired new tools for the visually impaired.
