CROSS BORDER ENVIRONMENTAL CELL AWARENESS IN DOXATO AND ΒΑΝΙΤΕ MUNICIPALITIES WITH BULGARIAN'S BIODIVERSITY FOUNDATION CONTRIBUTION (ECA)
Start date: Mar 13, 2011, End date: May 30, 2013 PROJECT  FINISHED

The main objective of the project is to activate the general public, local enterprises and farmers in order to reduce pollution and to preserve natural heritage. All project actions are orientated towards creating environmental consciousness, targeting specific groups which are identified as polluters (local enterprises), consumers (general public, citizens) and young people. The project’s idea is to educate the local population in a way that they realize the importance of rational use of local resources with emphasis on water, as well as of the companies to follow environmental legislation. This will be achieved through the foundation of the Environmental Cross-border Cell Awareness (ECA), which will constitute a dynamic network of environmental awakening and education. The ECA will create three high- technology environmental information centres in Doxato, Banite and Blagoevgrad where the visitors will experience augmented reality technology that has the capability to shock and awake on environmental issues. The visitors will be able to experience virtual touring representing areas of interest from an environmental point of view, interactive training and environmental educational games Expected Results: The immediate expected result is to awaken the majority of citizens, who believe that environmental crisis is far away from them. At the same time project activities will result in an increased environmental knowledge and educational level, with a large impact on young people. In the longer terms the project will contribute to creating new patterns of environmental behavior of individuals, groups and enterprises, adopting a lifestyle that is in harmony with the natural environment. Regarding citizens behavior it is expected that there will be a reduction in the consumption of local water resources and less pollution from the uncontrolled disposal of household waste. Farmers are expected to control the use of water and chemical pesticides and adopt alternative ways of fertilizing, such as biofertilizers, reducing the pollution and contamination of soil. Local enterprises are expected to respect the environmental terms they operate and the national legislation, resulting in reducing air, water and ground pollution. The ECA will be available online resulting in a multiplying effect in the wider public. Achieving better management of environmental resources will result in attracting different forms of investments, such as ecotourism, agricultural tourism, renewable sources of energy, recycling etc. The protection and promotion of rich and diverse natural resources of the cross-border area will act as a vehicle for balanced and economic development. Partners’ extensive experience in similar projects will add value to the expected results. 2 projects implemented between Banite and Doxato, “The Green Corridor of Rhodopes Ecosystem” and “Promotion of Nature Protection Actions and Sustainable Development” have initiated an open campaign on promoting and protecting the ecosystem. The new project will also utilize the existing database the previous projects developed with information related to both regions natural landmarks, biodiversity, green tourist services etc.
