Crisis and change in the European Union: From Economic Governance to Political Union.
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Based on a previous experience, this European Module intends to develop an intensive course of 48 hours, analysing the effects of financial and economic crisis on the European Union political model. This annual advanced course will complete the normal teachings on the EU, programmed in the Political Sciences Degrees. Students will have the oportunity to learn and deliberate about the last developments of the European integration process, based on recent research. Due to the crisis, the EU has experienced a relevant deepening of its economic model, which entails many challenges as the growing differentiation among Member States, the democratic shortfall of new procedures, tensions among States, and the creeping citizen dissafection. This process of change has only begun and we agree with scholars and political actors that there will probably be a formal Treaty revision in the following years. We want to develop a teaching, which analyses all these developments, challenges and the different future alternatives, in order to introduce students and civil society members in the complexity of European political debates. The methodology will mix theoretical explanations by the teacher with practical activities as documentation analysis, simulations, readings discussions and debates. Some of the topics will be further developed through lectures by experts, practitioners and members of European institutions. Also we plan to organise an annual Conference open to students and other interested people. This Conference will bring together scholars, experts and political actors in order to examine the development of the European integration process.
