Creative activities and motivating materials for secondary students. Focus on Scotland

The Project in Publiczne Gimnazjum w Kurowie concerned on creative activities and motivating materials for teaching English at secondary classroom, based on culture, history and every day life of Scotland. The project involved two mobilities for a course in Dunfermline, Scotland. The aim of the course was to gain a huge variety of new teching ideas and materials ready to use in class, to improve teachers’language skills, to exchange experiences and develop links with teachers from secondary schools in different European countries and to keep abreast of changes in British life and society as well as in educational systems. The programme of the course was seriously considered to match our needs. A culture project is a chance to fulfill the expectations of our teachers, students, parents and local commune. The school has obtained a bit of experience in international cooperation, we have hosted voluntary students from European, Asian and even Arabian countries for workshops in English. Our students are more and more open to the world but on the other hand, they are not motivated enough to learn. The planned activities were held from 31 December 2014 to 30 December 2015. The main aims were: - to enhance European value of education - to increase pupils’ motivation - to improve school’s educational offer - to improve pupil’s key competences- effective communicating in a foreign language - to involve other teachers from local community We have fulfilled a number of activities in cooperation with other teachers and even schools; The Scottish Week, a trip to an event Scotland Ceilidh, a competition about St Andrew, a poetry competition, artistic exhibition, educational project for second grade students and many actions promoting mobilities and possibilities of new Erasmus Plus program as well as e-Twinning program. The activities encouraging students to present their styles of learning, to develop interests and were to promote cross- linguistic skills of the students, what was to enhance their motivation and self-esteem. Each interested students could present their artistic, poetry, technical or even organizational skills. During the project and after finishing we hahe reached the following results benefits and long-term effects: - increasing personal and professional competences through getting new skills, ideas and improving the level of language skills; teachers found new ideas and solutions in working with a student with low motivation, methods of taking control at class and avoiding conflicts as well as methods of current checking particularly useful in their work. -increasing of teachers’ status in local community; a teacher gaining new competences and developing their knowledge is a good example for students and teachers’ attitude helps the students to appreciate the value of learning and satisfaction of having new skills -acquiring the knowledge about applying and financing issues in Erasmus Plus programme. All teachers (26) have been informed about how to apply in KA1 projects - developing links between European teachers in order to establish a partnership - increasing school’s prestige as the only one in the commune to realize mobilities to foreign courses - extending the school offer by organizing extra- school activities- a disco in a new style, dancing workshops, eTwinning project - providing the students with some attractive ways, new methods and ideas. The students were actively busy working with new materials and techniques, were eager to work in groups, accepted the mini white-boards to write answers during lessons. -ncreasing the cultural interests by learning about Scotland - establishing links with peers from other countries within international project - increasing the motivation to learning English; thanks to new experiences and didactic materials and methods ( group working, individual working) we have developed a better atmosphere in the classroom and students have become more focused on the target. - increasing tolerance and respect to other people's cultures - developing cultural awareness and also national identity - initiating actions to introduce innovations into the local community within Erasmus Plus programme - increasing the interest of learning foreign languages
