Continuance of Latvia-Lithuania crodd-border cooperation in protection of population and environment (LatLitCBC)

During the previous programming period (the INTERREREG III B project) municipalities of Jelgava city and Siauliai city, their fire-fighting and rescue services, established cross-border co-operation and an information exchange network in order to respond to natural disasters (such as floods, fires, and drought) and man-made disasters (including things like the leakage of hazardous chemical substances, road accidents, crime and acts of terrorism). Now these institutions are continuing their cooperation and are improving the capacity of human resources by organizing seminars and practical training for fire-fighters and rescue drivers, upgrading the 30 year-old fire fighting and rescue equipment. These activities shall lead to improved quality and effectiveness of fire-fighting and rescue services in the region. Achievements: 4 seminars and 2 trainings for firemen, 1 joinf fire fighting service established, cooperation agreement signed, fire fighting equipment purchased• Siauliai Region Fire Fighting and Rescure Council in Lithuania and State Fire and Rescure Se4rvice in Latvia resigned cooperation agreement. • 10 October 2009 seminar Latvian and Lithuanian special services cooperation in the liquidation of extreme situations in the border region: the current situation and prospects (1th part) was organized in Šiauliai. 32 people took part in it (21 form Lithuania and 11 from Latvia). 14 of October 2009 the 2nd part of the seminar was organized in Jelgava. 28 people took part (5 from Lithuania and 23 from Latvia). Both seminars were aimed to clarify the specificity of the rescue service works Latvian - Lithuanian border area: current situation and the problematic issues. On the basis of the conclusions of the first seminar fire fighting specialists were launched a draft of the joint action plan. • Siauliai Region Fire Fighting purchased one fire fighting and rescue truck with permanently installed equipment for rescue services in water, one container carrier with permanently installed equipment and one water container. • State Fire and Rescure Service in Latvia concluded procurement procedures for equipment purchases and signed contracts for the suply of fire fighting tank cistern with permanently installed equipment and turnable ladder vehcle with permanently installed equipment. • Information about project progress was spread in SFRS annual press conference.
