Construyendo una Escuela Oficial de Idiomas más dinámica, colaborativa, comunicativa y europea
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Official School of Languages of Maó is a state school which, after 15 years of experience, faces the arrival of a new management team and the recent independence of its former extension in Ciutadella. There are 13 professionals who teach English, German, French, Catalan and Italian; and the number of students equates to 1000, including official, non-official and distance students. Taking into consideration the previous facts, we consider the following objectives for our project: 1- Improve the management, organisation and proper functioning of the school. 2- Improve the external communication to be able to gain potential students. 3- Boost minority languages with tools and creative measures to reach a wider public. 4- Improve the communication among the teaching staff to exchange best practices and develop, share and transfer experiences. 5- Promote the use of ICT to achieve the previous goals. In order to achieve all these objectives, we will choose different activities which will be held in renowned European schools of Finland, Czech Republic, UK, Germany and Italy. First, participants will attend different preparatory activities; then, participants will carry out more theoretical activities in order to initiate a process of reflection and diffusion in our school (such as a Conference on learning, teaching and leadership in the educative sector, a structured course about educative leadership, and another one on Leading change: improving teaching and learning). These activities will be followed by more practical courses (such as Coaching Abilities: the way to improvement, making good use of ICT, community manager and social networks and best practices in Benchmarking). Finally, participants will evaluate the project’s success with the established indicators given by the committee. 5 participants will be selected to carry out these training activities. (1) one member of the school management team, who is in charge of management, organisation and proper functioning of a school but lacks experience and needs some training in this field; (2) (3) two heads of department who lead numerous teams and need to implement a more collaborative and innovative methodology; (4) one ICT coordinator, in order to improve the use of new technologies (e.g. learning and communication tools) in our school, as well as among teachers, students and potential students; and (5) one teacher of minority languages, as their representative and ambassador, in order to boost them and attract potential students. Not only will the participants improve their own knowledge, which they will be able to pass on to the rest of the teaching staff, but also they will enrich their language and cultural skills and will learn from other European fellows. The results which are expected following the project are: an increase in the number of students and teachers, the use of an innovative methodology (more unified and collaborative), more motivation, satisfaction and productivity of the students, improvement of the school´s website to get to a wider audience, development of the Catalan and Italian departments, and creation of a contact network with other European members for future projects. All of which will lead us to achieving a level of excellence that is expected from our model language school on the island. The project will have an impact locally and regionally as we will work together with other centres and institutions to share the knowledge and experiences acquired. The evaluation during the project is essential and will be accomplished using documents and forms created by the commission and through national certifications and other European tools. The process of circulating the knowledge will also be evaluated rigorously through surveys handed out to the education community members. For a wider circulation of the project, an update section will be created on the website; a promotional video will be developed to be circulated in different local and regional media and we will also organise open days and discussion table groups for other members of the education community that can make interesting contributions. Since the project began, all the centre's education team has been involved. We are thrilled and firmly convinced that the objectives that we propose will have a very positive impact in our school and all the education community.
